Social Programme

All delegates must book for the social events they wish to attend, including the Civic Reception, the Poster Party and the Conference Dinner.

Civic Reception
The conference will open with a civic-sponsored drinks reception in the conference venue, Glasgow Royal Concert Hall.

Monday 27 July 2009
Poster Party
Delegates will have the chance to view the posters and chat with the authors over drinks and a light buffet.

Wednesday 29 July 2009
Conference Dinner

The conference dinner will be held in the famous Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum. Pre-dinner drinks will be followed by dinner and entertainment.

Free Afternoon  Tours

There will be a free afternoon on Tuesday 28 July 2009. Glasgow has a wealth of unique and interesting ways to spend an afternoon, but to make the most of the free time, delegates may wish to join one of the oganised tours to experience more of the city and surrounding area.

This short introduction to Glasgow will cover a panoramic tour of the City Centre, including the River Clyde, the historic Cathedral and Merchant City, the Georgian grandeur of Blythswood Square, Kelvingrove Art Gallery and the University Campus. We drive through the Clyde Tunnel to visit the Burrell Art Collection in Pollok Country Park with the chance to see the largest herd of Highland Cattle in Britain.

Loch Lomond ShoresGlengoyne Distillery & Loch Lomond
Travelling from Glasgow we drive to the foot of the Campsie Fells and visit Glengoyne Distillery, where we will see how Scotland's national drink is produced. For those who wish there is even a taste of the end product! At Balloch we'll make a stop to enjoy the panoramic views from Loch Lomond Shores in the Loch Lomond National Park before returning to Glasgow.

Loch LomondLoch Lomond (including a sail on the Loch)
From Glasgow we travel along the banks of the river Clyde to Helensburgh and then by way of scenic Glen Fruin to Loch Lomond and on to Tarbet. Here we will board a cruiser for a sail on the Loch, in the shadow of Ben Lomond. Our final drive takes us along the banks of the Loch, with magnificent views to the islands, on our homeward journey to Glasgow.

Burns Cottage - Copyright Burns National Heritage Park WebsiteAyr and Burns Country
Our journey takes us through the golfing town of Troon, where we will see the Championship links course. At the small village of Alloway we will visit Robert Burns cottage, where the famous poet was born in 1759. There is also the opportunity to visit the Land O'Burns Centre which explains the life and times of Burns, before returning to Glasgow.

 Accompanying Guest Tours

The Accompanying Guest tours have been cancelled due to low numbers. If you would like to book sightseeing tours while in Glasgow, please go to the Scottish Tours website. We strongly recommend you book on-line in advance to guatantee a seat. Tours can also be booked at Buchanan Bus Station, across from the conference venue, subject to availability.
